Registering a death in Hackney.

Hackney Council will register a death in Hackney. They operate the Tell Us Once’ service – to make registering a death and notifying government departments as easy as possible.  However, we suggest you watch the video before you go into more detail about how to register a death in Hackney.  Should you need a family undertaker, click this link.

You have to register a death in Hackney within 5 days, unless the coroner is involved.

The following are permitted to register someones’ death in Hackney:

  • A relative present during the final illness, or at the death.
  • A relative, preferably currently living in Hackney.
  • A person present at the death
  • The person arranging the funeral (but not the funeral director.)

To register a death in Hackney, you will need to take the medical certificate of death. You will also need to take the following information (download our checklist to register a death in Hackney):

  • Full name (and any maiden name.)
  • If a married woman or a widow, the full name and occupation of her husband
  • Date and place of birth.
  • Occupation and usual address.

After you have confirmed these details you sign the death register. The Hackney registrar will give you one death certificate and a document authorising the funeral plus a certificate for the Department of Social Security. Additional death certificates are £4 each at the time, £10 after, so get plenty – you will need more than you anticipate.

For a death in Hackney, where you can’t get to Hackney in time, you can register at your local register office ‘by declaration’. However death certificates or related documents can’t be issued by Hackney until they receive the papers by post from the other Registrar.   This may cause the funeral to be delayed.

When will death in Hackney involve the Coroner?

Some deaths must go to the coroner before registration and before the document authorising the funeral can be issued.

The following types of death in Hackney will have to be reviewed by the Coroner:

  • where no doctor can issue a medical (sometimes because the GP is on holiday), or
  • where the deceased was not seen by the doctor issuing the medical certificate after death nor within 14 days before death, or
  • where the cause of death is  not known, or
  • is believed to be unnatural or suspicious, or
  • where death occurred during an operation or before recovery from an anaesthetic, or
  • where the death maybe due to “industrial disease.”

Once the coroner is involved, the registrar can’t register a death in Hackney until the coroner is happy. Generally, no further investigation is needed and registration can proceed forthwith. The coroner will may issue a certificate for burial or cremation if they are comfortable in doing so.
